Congrats to the students who recieved recognition awards today. Awards were given to students for the outstanding example they set in our classroom and in french.
Most of the students in our room have a homework free week-end :) :)
Some students did bring home their art projects to finish as we are putting the blocks together to make a paper quilt and would like to get that finished. Four students still need to pass in the book report that was due on Tuesday & I am still waiting for 6, 1X fact activities.
Of course the next book report is coming up and I expect that everyone will read on the week-end for the simple enjoyment of reading. I checked most of the students book choices today, those who needed to make changes had time to do that. A few had left their books home, all students were reminded that bringing their book report book to school each day is part of their homework. It will be those students responsibility to check their books out with me on Monday.
I hope everyone has a great week-end.

(:(:There will not be any homework over the long weekend(: (:
I do hope that people will continue to read each day however as reading should be a fun activity and not a chore. I never consider reading to be part of assigned homework. I'd like to take this opportunity to say how much I've been enjoying my year and what a joy it is to be teaching your children. I hope you continue to check our blog for information and homework clearification. If there is anything we can do to make it more parent friendly please do not hesitate to leave a message as they all go through my e-mail before the children see them. (just another way to improve on parent/school communication)
Thanks Mrs.Murphy

Wednesday, June 13, 2007
We had a great time on our field trip on Monday and we learned alot about local life in the 1800's. Ask me about what I learned. We took the following notes in class today.
Life in The 1800's
many things were homemade
- candles (stored in metal boxes and hung on wall to protect them from mice)
- soap made out of fat and ashes
- fishing rods
wrote with a feather and ink
children were not permitted to touch the books
needed the animals for many things
- cows for milk for drinking, cheese
- horses for transportation
- horse hair to stuff upholstery
- cats to catch mice
- straw matresses
- chickens used for meat & eggs were eaten
children had many chores
- carry water from the river using a yolk so they could carry 2 buckets at a time
- older children taught younger ones to read & write
didn't have electricity
- candles for light
- fire to cook food
buck saw required 2 people
used barrels to catch rain water
homes were usually built near to a river
- provided fish for food
grew own food
- fruit trees
preserved their food
- dried apples

The end of the year is fast approaching, the nice weather has arrived and little minds are no longer focused on school. We will be having very little homework from now to the end of the year but it is hoped that students will continue to read on a nightly basis. Assessments are being written however and proper rest is extreamly important for optimal success.

Both classes are working on a Mothers Day essay. The essay itself is meant to be a gift so mothers are asked not to help. Other significant persons in your childs life are encouraged to help with the generation of ideas and revising however. We also discussed that many different persons may take on a mothering role in our lives and children were given the option to choose the person who best fit that role in their life. The following guide may & should be used to help revise.
Why my mother should win the mothers day contest prize.
Ideas
Is my topic clear?
Did I tell in my opening sentence who I was talking about?
Did I hook my reader in the first few sentences? Will they want to read on?
Did I tell enough?
Did I sum up with a closing sentence?
Sentence Fluency
Did I read my piece out loud at least 5X?
Does it sound O.K.?
Was I able to breath as I read?
Did it sound smooth & flow well?
Do my sentences vary in lenght?
Organization

Did I talk about what my mom does for me and with me in different paragraphs?
Are different memories given their own paragraph and well developed?

Did I make the words work for me? Did they clearify my message?
Did I begin my sentences with different words?
Voice

Will it leave my reader feeling warm and fuzzy?
Will it make my reader smile or will it move my reader to tears?
Did I use idioms or interesting & unique ideas to make the writing sound like me?

We have no homework over the March break but students will be bringing home their literacy binder, writers journal and their frienship book.
Writers journal is an ongoing project that doesn't take vacation, we should always be thinking about writing. Many published authors carry journals and find them very usefull. Your childs journal should contain ideas, fun words, million dollar words and phrases. It may also have pictures, stories and poetry.
